The good news is, if you're already an alert, aware driver, constantly scanning and checking your mirrors, you'll be less likely to be 'surprised', and can react calmly to help the responding emergency crew get past you quickly and safely.
This British video is full of great tips for being 'Blue Light Aware', but many of the basic principles - turn off your radio, plan ahead and look for a safe place to pull over, be aware of the traffic around you - will help you react to emergency vehicles anywhere.
